DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS
Las Vegas was born downtown. Fremont Street is where Nevada's casino industry began in the 1930s — and it remains a thriving, distinct casino experience.
The flagship downtown casino — Las Vegas's most iconic Fremont Street address
The Golden Nugget anchors Fremont Street as the premier downtown Las Vegas casino. Following a major renovation program, the property features a 38,000 sq ft casino, multiple upscale dining options, and the famous pool complex with a water slide through a three-story shark tank. The most luxurious casino experience downtown.
A Fremont Street original since 1956
One of downtown Las Vegas's original casino hotels, open since 1956 and directly connected to the Fremont Street Experience canopy. Boyd Gaming operates multiple downtown properties; Fremont Hotel is a well-positioned anchor of the Fremont Street corridor with easy access to the outdoor entertainment district.
The oldest continuously operating casino in Las Vegas — since 1941
El Cortez is the oldest continuously operating casino in Las Vegas, open since 1941 — one block east of Fremont Street. El Cortez maintains a classic downtown gambling culture with competitive table minimums and a loyal local following. A genuine Las Vegas original with significant historical character.
OFF-STRIP & LOCALS
Locals casinos often deliver lower table minimums, more generous comp programs, and less crowded gaming floors than the Strip tourist corridor.

Strongly oriented toward locals, it consistently offers lower table minimums than the Strip and a generous comp program. Features include a 16-screen bowling center and the only equestrian center attached to a Las Vegas casino resort.
NEVADA GAMING REGULATION
Nevada has the most mature commercial casino regulatory framework in the United States, with a history going back to 1931.
Every casino in Nevada is commercially operated and licensed by the state. Nevada has no tribal gaming compacts and no IGRA-regulated tribal casinos — making it distinct from neighboring states like California and Arizona. The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) and Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) are the sole regulatory authorities. Nevada first legalized casino gambling in 1931.
Nevada casinos offer the full range of table games: blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat, Three Card Poker, Let It Ride, Spanish 21, and more. Poker rooms are common at major Strip and downtown properties. Slot machines and video poker dominate most gaming floors. Table minimums range from $5 at off-Strip and locals properties to $25–$100+ on the Strip. High-limit rooms routinely spread $500+ minimums for qualified players.
Nevada strictly enforces 21 as the minimum gambling age across all licensed gaming establishments — casino floors, slot routes, race and sports books, and poker rooms. There are no exceptions of any kind. Persons under 21 are prohibited from being on the casino gaming floor. Valid government-issued photo ID is required at all Nevada gaming establishments.
SPORTS BETTING
Nevada was the only state with legal single-game sports betting in the United States for decades. Today, virtually every Nevada casino — Strip resorts, downtown properties, and locals casinos alike — operates a race and sports book. Sports wagering is embedded into Las Vegas culture and is a major draw for visitors year-round. All sports wagering is regulated by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
ONLINE GAMBLING
Nevada authorizes specific forms of online gambling. Understanding what is and is not legal matters for both visitors and residents.
Nevada legalized online poker in 2013 under NRS 463. Players physically located in Nevada may legally play real-money online poker through licensed operators. Age and location verification is required.
Nevada players may participate in multi-state poker networks with New Jersey, Delaware, and Michigan.
Online slots, online blackjack, online roulette, online baccarat, and other online casino games are NOT legal in Nevada. Nevada law does not authorize online casino gaming. Only online poker is explicitly permitted. Residents and visitors seeking casino-style online play may not do so legally under Nevada law.
Licensed Nevada sports books may offer mobile wagering to customers physically located in Nevada. First-time users must register in person at a licensed Nevada sports book before placing mobile bets. Available through Caesars Sportsbook Nevada, BetMGM Nevada, and other licensed Nevada operators.
2026 & BEYOND
Several major development projects are reshaping the Las Vegas Strip over the next two years.
The Venetian Resort is in the midst of a $1.5 billion renovation of all 4,000+ hotel suites and casino floor improvements — one of the largest single-property renovation investments in Las Vegas history. The project is expected to complete in 2026, elevating the already world-class property to an entirely new tier.
The Mirage Hotel & Casino — a Las Vegas landmark since 1989 — closed permanently on July 17, 2024. Hard Rock International is transforming the property into a new Las Vegas flagship featuring a distinctive guitar-shaped tower. The converted property is currently under development and expected to open in approximately 2027.
The Tropicana Las Vegas closed in April 2024 after 67 years of operation and was subsequently demolished. Bally's Corporation is developing a new integrated casino resort on the site, adjacent to a new MLB ballpark for the Las Vegas Athletics (formerly Oakland Athletics). Both the casino and the stadium are expected to open in late 2027.
